Downtown Greensboro NC - Click to visit our photo galleryHistorical Greensboro, North Carolina, the county seat for Guilford County, enjoys a prosperous economy dominated by the manufacturing and textile industries. The city also serves a large agricultural area as an important distribution, transportation and insurance center. Greensboro’s furniture factories annually host exhibitors from all over the world. The city’s ever-growing industries thrive based largely on Guilford County’s transportation infrastructure, which includes two major interstate highways, Piedmont Triad International Airport, and readily available trucking and rail service. 

Greensboro is located in the Piedmont Plateau region of North Carolina, lush with bountiful crops and nature’s beauty. But nature is not Greensboro only enrichment. Greensboro proudly boasts academic wealth blessed with five institutions of higher learning: Bennett College, Greensboro College, Guilford College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. 

The founding of Greensboro in 1808 destined the city as a palatial historical center when its name was chosen to honor General Nathanael Greene, an American Revolutionary War commander and hero who fought in the Battle of Guilford at the nearby Guilford Courthouse. The 220-acre Guilford Courthouse National Military Park founded in 1917, northwest of Greensboro, commemorates the historical battle and those who valiantly fought. Greensboro also enjoys the distinction of being the birthplace of O. Henry, the famous short-story writer and home to Dolley Madison, wife of United States president, James Madison. 

Downtown Greensboro NC - Click to visit our photo galleryGreensboro continued making history by being one of the first cities in the United States to adopt the council-manager form of government in 1921, the same form of government the city enjoys today. 

Ensuring a prosperous future, seven arteries of transportation and commerce passed through Greensboro by 1820. In the 1850s, development of the 129 mile Fayetteville and Western Plank Road stretching through the southwest part of Guilford County set another historical precedent as the longest thoroughfare of its type in the world. The later 1850’s saw creation of the North Carolina Railroad, increased growth precipitated by the lower cost of time and dollars to ship goods and less reliance on the engineering marvel of the Plank Road. 

As one of the best places in the United States to live and work, Guilford County is home to many corporate and regional offices including Jefferson-Pilot, Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corporation, Lorillard Corporation, Cone Mills and VF Corporation. Federal Express Corporation recently announced construction of a $300 million mid-Atlantic cargo hub adjacent to Piedmont Triad International Airport, projected for completion in 2003.
